St. Vincent de Paul Society

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (or “Vincentians”) are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to individuals in need. We are young and old. Our members come from every shade of skin color. Some of us are wealthy, some are financially poor, but all of us are blessed with an awareness that our blessings (time, talent or treasure) are to be shared with our brothers and sisters in need.

The Kenya Outreach Ministry – St. Josephine Bakhita Secondary School

“Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible – and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” These words of St. Francis reflect perfectly the experience of our Kenya School Project.

Back in 2008, when a small group of us became aware of the great need for a local, affordable secondary school in the rural community of Gitare, Kenya, we wanted to help. It was a daunting task to take on – but it seemed possible if we built the school in phases, over as many years as it would take to raise the necessary funds. We enlisted the collaboration and oversight of the Diocese of Nakuru in Kenya and launched an appeal for support to our Holy Family parishioners. Our dream quickly caught fire – and soon many, in both our parish and in the broader communities beyond, joined us in this venture.

And suddenly YOU are doing the impossible! In just five years, we’ve purchased the land; built four classrooms, entrance ways, restrooms, meeting and storage rooms, a water tank and distribution system, and administration offices; purchased student desks and chairs; and beginning in 2011, enrolled a new grade level of students each year. 2014 will bring at least forty more young people, completing the four grade levels – and will also bring us to our first graduation!

We invite you to continue partnering with us in this “Impossible Dream” as we move this year into Phase IV: building and fully equipping a science lab which will meet Kenya’s educational requirements. Your prayers and financial contributions are deeply appreciated by the students and their families, who know that education is the key that can unlock their full potential and forever enrich their lives.

One hundred percent of your tax-deductible contribution will be used for this project. Please make your check payable to Holy Family Catholic Community with Kenya School Project noted on the memo line. May God bless you abundantly.
